- Robert Furchgott '40, winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
- George Rathmann '48, founder of Amgen and a founding father of the modern biotechnology industry.
- Harry Gray, PhD '60, pioneering inorganic chemist and winner of the Wolf Prize, who has rewritten some fundamental rules of chemistry.
- Marc Kirschner '66, founding chair, department of systems biology, Harvard Medical School.
- Joan Brugge '71, chair, department of cell biology, Harvard Medical School.
Edward Weiler '71, '73, '76, (pictured at right) NASA astrophysicist and father of the Hubble Telescope. Chief scientist for the Hubble from 1979-98. - Brian Shiro '00, geophysicist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, monitors the globe for earthquakes that could produce tsunamis.

- Saul Bellow '37, Honorary '62, author of American classics The Adventures of Augie March, Seize the Day, and Humboldt's Gift and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Kathy Reichs, MA '72 and PhD '75, (pictured at right) forensic anthropologist and bestselling author. Reichs's books have spawned a new generation of forensic crime fiction. - Angela Jackson '77, award-winning poet.
- Sharon Patton, PhD '80, recent director of the National Museum of African Art (Smithsonian).

- Don Chaon '86, novelist and short story writer.
Anthony Bozza '94, (pictured at right) best-selling author of seven books, including a biography of rapper Eminem. Crosscurrents feature on Anthony Bozza- Will Butler '05, musician, songwriter, and member of The Arcade Fire, an award-winning indie rock band located in Montreal. He is also a poet and graduate of the English Major in Writing.

- Eva Jefferson Paterson '71, civil rights attorney and former national student leader of peace movement in the early 1970s.

- Johnetta Cole, MA '59 and PhD '67 (anthropology) Honorary Doctorate '92. Cole was the first African American female president of Spelman College and was president of Bennett College from 2002-2007. She is currently serving as director of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African Art.
- Kenneth Seeskin '68 is the Philip M. and Ethel Klutznick Professor of Jewish Civilization at Northwestern. He served for nearly 20 years as Chair of the Philosophy Department and is currently Chair of Religious Studies. The award-winning author is best known for his interpretation and defense of the rationalist tradition in Jewish philosophy.
