"Being near Chicago is a huge perk. It expands the borders of where Northwestern students can go for recreation or internships." --Andy Kern
Explore Chicago and your future
Professors often take advantage of Chicago to enrich their courses, so that if you are studying King Lear, your class may see the play performed at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater on Navy Pier. Or your anthropology class might visit the Museum of Contemporary Art and its South African exhibit, dining afterwards at an Ethiopian restaurant.
For the cost of student admission and a round-trip ride on the city's famous 'L' train, you can experience the Art Institute, the Field Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, or the Lyric Opera, to name a few. Follow your interests:
- Learn about the city's renowned architecture or explore special library collections.
- Check out traditional and experimental theaters; the great places to hear blues, gospel, folk, jazz, pop, and rock; the ethnic restaurants and famous neighborhoods; the zoos, botanical gardens, Shedd Aquarium, or Adler Planetarium.
- Root for Chicago's home teams: the Bears, Bulls, Cubs, Hawks, Sox, and Chicago Fire.
Chicago is more than a great place to visit. Only 11 miles from the Evanston campus, Chicago offers our students extraordinary opportunities for internships and community service. Chicago Field Studies helps over 250 students per year explore the broader community of Chicago and Evanston and, through internships, students make important contributions to the organization's goals. Students take one of CFS's part- or full-time courses and connect seminar readings and discussions with internship work, organization culture and current issues. Weinberg College also draws skilled professionals from Chicago to teach Professional Linkage Seminars that bridge the gap between academic training and real-world application.
