Student profile: John Lee

John Lee

Hometown: Euless, TX
Major: Political Science
Minor: Business Institutions Program
What's Next: Business school and a career in consulting -- "something I did not expect whatsoever when I came here."

Why Northwestern? "The special programs offered – Brady, Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences, and
Business Institutions – really pulled me into Northwestern. With the Brady program, I could study ethics in a deep and profound way in a collaborative setting with lots of discussion. I knew from high school that I learn best that way."

How have you grown? "The Brady program has taught me to articulate my thoughts in a logical way. I've become a much better writer, across all dimensions. I have more confidence now that my opinions are valid. That belief was cultivated during my sophomore year, with professors actively encouraging participation. Staying silent was pretty impossible in the Brady program."

Have you done original research? "Northwestern has really fantastic, accessible professors who are, quite literally, at the top of their fields. I've done independent research for three years with poli sci professor Dennis Chong. He's been a phenomenal mentor for me. He's always there to answer my questions: Should I do an honors thesis? What internships should I pursue? What courses in political science should I be taking? I would be a volunteer spokesperson for the political science department at Northwestern if I could. I have taken so many classes that have just profoundly influenced the way I think, the way I conceptualize politics and society at large."
