Count on a great start

From the moment you arrive on campus, you'll be surrounded by people who want you to thrive at Northwestern.

  • You'll take two freshman seminars designed to help you develop first-rate thinking and writing skills.
  • You'll connect with sixteen other students as you analyze and debate things that matter, from global warming and stem cell research to French utopian thought and ideas of justice.
  • A typical freshman's schedule includes another small class of 20 to 25 students, a medium-sized class, and a larger, introductory lecture course.

As you start your Northwestern journey, your adviser will guide you. You'll meet one-on-one to talk about your academic progress, opportunities on campus, possible majors – whatever is important to you. And you'll get to know your professors as they help you direct your education, from grounding in a discipline to independent research, field work, internships or study abroad.

Our outstanding faculty members are deeply committed to teaching. They bring to the classroom both expertise and a contagious drive for discovery.

Weinberg teachers emphasize analytical thinking, effective self-expression, imagination, intellectual flexibility, well-reasoned ethical and aesthetic judgments – abilities to help you meet the challenges of the 21st century.
