Who, What, Where

Weinberg College is a community of 4,400 undergraduate students, 1,000 graduate students, and 600 full-time faculty members. You need 45 credits to graduate, typically four courses a quarter, three quarters per year. You also need to meet the following requirements:

  • Writing proficiency – may be fulfilled in a variety of ways by graduation
  • Foreign language proficiency – the equivalent of two years of college instruction
  • Freshman seminars – two
  • Distribution requirements – two courses in each of six areas: natural sciences; formal studies (e.g., math, logic); social and behavioral sciences; historical studies; ethics and values (e.g., philosophy, religion); literature and fine arts
  • At least one major chosen from over 45 disciplinary and interdisciplinary options

More than 30 percent of our students complete a double major. In a given quarter, between 70 and 80 percent of our classes have 20 students or fewer.

Our entering students

Each year roughly 1,100 freshmen enter the college, chosen from over 15,000 applicants. They come from all 50 states and more than 30 foreign countries. The top states of origin are Illinois, California, New York, Texas, Ohio, Florida, and New Jersey.

Our graduates

Our most popular majors in recent years are: Economics, Psychology, Biological Sciences, Political Science, International Studies, History, English, Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Anthropology. Students stay at Northwestern and graduate on time. Entering freshmen return for their sophomore year (97 percent) and graduate from Northwestern (95 percent). More than 80 percent of Weinberg graduates eventually undertake graduate or professional study.

Latest exit survey findings

Eighty-two percent of Northwestern graduates who applied to medical schools were accepted. Graduates who applied to business, dental, or law school all enjoyed acceptance rates well above the national average.
