Your competitive advantage
As you look to your own future as a Weinberg College graduate, you'll take with you the lifelong arts of critical reading and effective writing, of listening and speaking, of sound thinking, of observation, calculation, and measurement, of scientific method, and of judgment.
And because you've learned how to learn, you'll have an important advantage that employers value – flexibility of mind – no matter what your field or how many times you take a different path. Our latest exit surveys show that two-thirds of our graduates planned immediate employment. The other third planned to go right to graduate school in medicine, law, business and master's and doctoral programs in the arts and sciences.
Northwestern students find ample opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. Many of our students eagerly undertake social service. Whether assisting a team in the Special Olympics, teaching about the environment during spring break, or spending Saturdays building homes with Habitat for Humanity, your Northwestern education will empower you not only to succeed in your personal and professional life but also to be a force for positive change.
Widen your horizons
Student profile: Nimbe Gonzalez
Hometown: Cicero, IL
Major: Political Science and Gender Studies
What's Next: Perhaps law school and a career with an international organization like the United Nations
How have you changed? "At Northwestern I've learned to expect more from myself, to push my boundaries, to learn about other people's cultures. One of my best friends is from India, and he tells me what it's like to live in Mumbai. There are so many things I couldn't have known without coming here."
What would you tell others? Through classes which challenged her perspectives, groups like Alianza, and the enthusiastic involvement of fellow students, Nimbe has become an activist, especially in recruiting minorities to campus. "I always tell people from my high school: there is so much you can learn here and there are so many ways in which you can grow. Northwestern is definitely going to be rewarding. It's a great community. There is always someone to help you. It's a good place to be."
What have you discovered? "Latino Studies and Gender Studies have enriched my life; I am more aware of the larger issues involved in each. When I took Introduction to Feminism, I realized that women's rights were something I could approach from a legal standpoint. There are so many women who have little to no sexual knowledge and still believe myths about HIV and AIDS. I would like to help expand that knowledge and to promote reproductive rights for women in other countries."
