Welcome from the Dean

Dean Sarah Mangelsdorf

Weinberg is the largest of Northwestern’s schools, with more than 4,000 undergraduates, 1,000 graduate students and 600 full-time faculty members. Our college offers the best of both academic “worlds”: a nurturing liberal arts experience within the dynamic environment of a major research university. There is a wide range of curricular choice (2,000 courses), yet classes are generally small (75 percent having 25 students or fewer). Almost all classes are taught by full-time faculty members: outstanding scholars who will get to know you, inspire you and guide you to the kind of opportunities that only a world-class research university can provide.

The campus community is a diverse one. Northwestern students come from all 50 states and from more than 30 countries. Their differing perspectives enrich the learning experience, both within and outside the classroom. In 2006, the college launched a PhD program in African American Studies, the seventh such program nationwide, drawing students and scholars from all over the country.

At Weinberg College, we encourage diversity in intellectual pursuits as well. Our extraordinary range of courses and programs includes 44 majors and minors and 30 interdisciplinary degrees. Our partnerships with other Northwestern schools have resulted in outstanding opportunities for students, such as the legal studies program, in conjunction with the School of Law, and the certificate in Financial Economics, with the Kellogg School of Management.

Our location in the Greater Chicago area avails students of internships at places like the Art Institute, the Field Museum, the Adler Planetarium, the Federal Reserve Bank, and the Newberry Library, as well as joint graduate programs with the Chicago Botanic Garden.

We invite you to read about the accomplishments of our faculty and students on this site, as well as to learn about upcoming events, internships and study abroad opportunities all over the world. Our current students can find degree requirement information and our prospective students can learn how to apply to Northwestern. If you are considering applying, please take more than our virtual tour; come for a visit. As a comparative newcomer to Northwestern myself, I can tell you that the campus on the shores of Lake Michigan is even more beautiful than it looks in our photographs!

Happy browsing!
