Staff Advisory Board Update — Summer 2017

A roundup of events sponsored by the Weinberg College Staff Advisory Board

Speed Networking Event
New and seasoned Weinberg College staff participated in a speed networking event on Aug. 29 hosted by the Staff Advisory Board. Held in the recently renovated Kresge Centennial Hall, attendees participated in multiple four-minute meeting sessions during which they shared their experiences, resources and knowledge with one another. This event afforded staff the opportunity to learn interesting facts about fellow colleagues across departments.

Ice Cream Social, Paddleboarding and Kayaking

On Aug. 7 and 15, the Northwestern University sailing center welcomed staff to take advantage of our lakefront access with the annual standup paddleboard and kayaking event. On July 20, Weinberg College staff took a break during the day for an ice cream social in the warm summer sun.

Rain Can’t Spoil Staff BBQ

The Staff Advisory Board hosted a barbeque on June 20th for Weinberg College staff. Despite sporadic rain, more than a hundred staffers attended. Grillmasters Deavon MitchellBen Rice and Parth Joshi kept burgers and hot dogs coming through the wind and the rain. A good time was had by all.

Weinberg College Teams Up Against Hate

Each year for the last 18 years, the Ricky Byrdsong Race Against Hate has taken place on Sheridan Road and Northwestern’s Long Field. This year, Weinberg Staff Advisory Board co-chair Linda Remaker championed an inaugural Weinberg College team. Thanks to the generosity of donors and participants, the team raised $1,470 on June 18, putting it in third place for team fundraising, and most importantly, benefitting the YWCA's racial justice and violence prevention programs.

Ricky Byrdsong was the first African American basketball coach at Northwestern and served from 1993 to 1997. His life was tragically cut short in 1999 when he was murdered by a white supremacist on a killing spree. (Read more about the Byrdsong story and the history of the race.)

“It was a great first showing for this particular event, and we are looking forward to participating again next year!” said Linda. We hope you will join us next year too.
