  6. Click OK.

Create links to documents (PDF, Word, Excel, etc)

  1. Browse to the page where the file is linked in Contribute and click Edit.
  2. Highlight the text you wish to link to the document. It may already be a link if you have uploaded an earlier copy of the file.
  3. Choose Link > File on My Computer.  The Insert Link window will open.
  4. Click the Browse... button to choose the file on your computer.
  5. Click OK on the Insert Link window.
  6. Publish the page. Contribute will upload the file to the web server for you.

If you later make changes to the file you uploaded on your computer and want to see the changes reflected in the copy on the web site, follow these same steps again, highlighting the same text you did in Step 2 to make the link. The new version will be uploaded when you publish the page.

Create links to email addresses

Links to e-mail addresses will launch the user's e-mail client when they click the link. To inform users of this, all links to e-mail addresses should use the e-mail address as the link text (i.e., don't link a person's name to their e-mail address, only link their e-mail address).

  1. Browse to the page and click Edit (as described in Updating Pages with Contribute).
  2. Highlight the e-mail address you wish to link.
  3. Click Link (top center of window) and select E-mail Address...
  4. Enter the e-mail address in the space provides. Click OK.

Creating jump/back to top links

Jump and back to top links are useful for long pages (like this one). The places where the user jumps to are section anchors. You need to define where you want your section anchors and then link to them.

Creating Section Anchors

  1. Browse to the page and click Edit (as described in Updating Pages with Contribute).
  2. Put the cursor in at the beginning of a heading or paragraph where you want a section anchor.
  3. Under the Insert menu, choose Section Anchor...
  4. A box asking for the Section Anchor Name will pop up. Give the section a one-word name (preferably in all lowercase). Click OK.

You will see a little flag in your page where the section anchor is.

Linking to Section Anchors

  1. Highlight the text you wish to link.
  2. Click Link (top center of window) and select Browse to Web Page...
  3. Click the Browse... button and browse to the web page you are currently editing. Click OK (in the browsing window).
  4. In the insert link window, Click Advanced (bottom left of window). The window will expand to show additional options.
  5. Choose the section anchor you want to link to in the Section anchor pull-down menu.
  6. Click OK.

Creating the Back to Top Links

If there isn't already a "top" section anchor on your site, create one following the above instructions. Link to that anchor as needed following the above instructions (you can copy and paste the link once it is created).

Edit links

To change the destination of a link, highlight the link you wish to modify and follow the instructions above.

Remove links

To remove a link without deleting the text, highlight the link you wish remove. Under the Format menu, choose Remove Link... screenshot of removing links

Add a link to side navigation

If you would like to add a new link to a locked area of your page (e.g., the navigation across the top or left-hand side of your site) please contact web@wcas.northwestern.edu or visit the Contact Us page.
