Proposing New Majors and Minors
Occasionally a department or program considers adding a new major or minor to their curriculum. Or, a new department or program may be developed, with the introduction of a new major and/or minor as one goal. Such units should email Laura Panko, Assistant Dean for Curriculum and Assessment, early in the process for guidance on Weinberg procedures and for assistance in developing a formal proposal. Early discussions about new majors and minors will always include a Dean's-level conversation about resource implications.
Formal proposals for new majors and minors should contain all relevant elements described in more detail on our page on Changing Majors and Minors. These include:
- Some background explaining why the department or program is proposing the major and/or minor.
- A presentation of learning goals for students in the major and/or minor.
- A detailed presentation of proposed major and/or minor requirements.
- An assessment plan.
