Language Placement Testing Times and Locations

Information for Fall 2015 Incoming Students

Online tests for Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Korean, Latin, Spanish and Swahili should be taken prior to arrival on campus.  All other on-campus placement exams and interviews/validation of proficiency will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at 3 p.m. Locations and information about exam format will be posted here by September 1, 2015.

Please email placement coordinator Fatima Khan to sign up for a timeslot at fatima@northwestern.edu.  Validation takes 20 to 30 minutes per student.  Students with any prior experience with the language (formal or informal) must go through the placement process.  The online placement exam should be taken before the validation session.

Chinese Harris 107 3pm Essay test/or interview

Students with prior experience in Mandarin Chinese should have completed the online placement test (http://placement-test.mmlc.northwestern.edu) before this test. Please bring your own pencil and be at the testing room 10 minutes early.  The whole process should take about two hours. 

Czech Library B234 3 to 5pm Written test/oral interview

Please be at the testing room right at 3 pm. The exam should take approximately 90 minutes.

French Seabury 250 3 to 5pm Written test/oral interview

The interview/validation test will take about 30 minutes total, and students can stop by anytime between 3 and 5 pm. However, please arrive no later than 4:30 pm in order to be done by 5 pm.

German 1800 Sherman, Suite 106, Rm 102 3 to 5pm Written composition/oral interview

Students take the placement exam online over the summer and will be notified of their results via email. Please attend this session if you have questions about which German class to take, or if you have been invited via e-mail to take a validation exam (written and oral).

Ancient Greek BY APPOINTMENT ONLY Written test/oral interview

Hebrew Fisk 114 3 to 4:30pm

Hindi-Urdu University 102 3 to 5pm Written test/oral interview

•Students who received a score of 5 or above on the Hindi high-level IB exam, or who took the 10th or 12th grade Hindi Board Examination and scored 70% or above, should bring a copy of their IB exam or Board exam grade sheet and submit it to Dr. Rami Nair at the start of the placement exam.

•The Hindi-Urdu placement test consists of both oral and written components. Both components will be tested on the same day. The written test will be given in the Devanagari script. Students who want to test using the Nastaliq script (Urdu), need to petition for proficiency validation in a language not taught at Northwestern http://www.weinberg.northwestern.edu/handbook/documents/FL_validation_form.pdf

Please attend if you are interested in Italian and have questions about Italian courses or if you have taken the online placement test and need to complete it with an interview.

Japanese Library B183 3 to 5pm Online and written exams

Korean University 101 3pm Written test/oral interview

Please be at the testing room at least 5 minutes early as the test will start promptly at 3:00.  It will take approximately 60 minutes.  Please bring your own pencil and eraser. It will take approximately 60 minutes” to be “It will take approximately 1 ~ 1 1.5 hours.

Persian (Farsi) 1800 Sherman 5436 3 to 5pm Oral interview and reading

Polish Library B234 3 to 5pm Written test/oral interview

Please be at the testing room right at 3 pm. The exam should take approximately 90 minutes.

Portuguese Crowe 3-130 3 to 5pm Written test/oral interview

Please be at the testing room right at 3 pm.  The exam should take approximately 75 minutes.

Russian Library B234 3 to 5pm Online exam

Please be at the testing room right at 3 pm.  The exam should take approximately 90 minutes.

Spanish University 121, 122 3 to 5pm Written composition/oral interview

The Spanish reassessment is only for students who earned "reassessment" on the placement exam. It will take about 30 minutes total, and students can stop by anytime between 3 to 5 pm. However, please arrive no later than 4:30 in order to be done by 5 pm.  There will be an additional reassessment held Thursday, Sept. 17, from 1 to 2 pm in University Hall 121 and 122.

Swahili Deering Library 208 3 to 5pm Oral interview

Interview to validate on-line written exam results and assess oral proficiency for placement into 121-1 (1st quarter 2nd year) or 216-1 (1st quarter 3rd year/placed out of WCAS and SoC two-year foreign language proficiency requirement). Interview takes about 30 minutes, but the assessor will be in the MultiMedia Learning Center's space in room 208 in Deering Library for the whole 3:00-5:00 period.
