Language Placement Testing Times and Locations

Information for Fall 2014 Incoming Students

Online tests for Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Korean, Latin, Spanish and Swahili should be taken prior to arrival on campus.  All other on-campus placement exams and interviews/validation of proficiency will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 3 p.m.  Refer to the chart for language-specific information and location.

•Please email placement coordinator Uri Horesh to sign up for a timeslot at uri.horesh@northwestern.edu.  Validation takes 20 to 30 minutes per student.  Students with any prior experience with the language (formal or informal) must go through the placement process.  The online placement exam should be taken before the validation session; please complete the online exam by Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 12 pm.

•Students who received a score of 5 or above on the Hindi high-level IB exam, or who took the 10th or 12th grade Hindi Board Examination and scored 70% or above, should bring a copy of their IB exam or Board exam grade sheet and submit it to Dr. Rami Nair at the start of the placement exam.

•The Hindi-Urdu placement test consists of both oral and written components. Both components will be tested on the same day. The written test will be given in the Devanagari script. Students who want to test using the Nastaliq script (Urdu), need to petition for proficiency validation in a language not taught at Northwestern http://www.weinberg.northwestern.edu/handbook/documents/FL_validation_form.pdf
