Creating a New Page

To create a new page, go to File > New, and select Page from Template on the left. On the menu farthest to the right, select the template for this section (or "Default" if you haven't created any) and double-click. A new file based on the template will be created for you to edit.

Editing the Breadcrumb

To edit the breadcrumb, click inside the blue-green box marked "breadcrumb" and edit the text just as you would in a word processor to reflect the title of the page and its place in the hierarchy. For example, a typical department site might include a breadcrumb of "Home > About Us > Curriculum."

If you have a single-page site or would prefer to leave it as-is, you can skip this.

Editing Content

Simply type and edit inside the box marked "Content" as if it were a text editor. "Heading 1" will create larger heading text to mark a new section or the page title. The Reference Guide may be useful for this step if you have never used Dreamweaver before.

Uploading Your Page

To upload your page, find the icon directly next to the "Title" box above the page window and click on the image of the arrows to see a drop-down menu. Click "put," and so long as the server information has been defined correctly, the page should upload to the site. If Dreamweaver asks you if you would like to "Put dependent files," answer "Yes."

To make changes, simply make your edits and then re-upload the file or files that you have changed to see the changes reflected on your web site.

To upload a number of files at once, go to the "Files" box on the right side of the screen, select the files to upload or the folder that contains them, and click the blue upward-poiting arrow near the top of the box to upload your files.

For Pages With Multiple Editors

If two or more people are working on the site together, it is a good idea to download the whole site before beginning any editing, in case another person has done work on it in the meantime, as changes do not automatically download to all computers that have been working on a page.

To download all the files on the server within your site, find the "Files" box on the right side of the screen and click on the top folder that begins with "Site." Then, click above that on the green downward-pointing arrow to get the whole site. Alternatively, you may download new copies of individual files by clicking on them and then the down arrow.

Adobe Contribute Tips

#1: To create a line break without a line space, hold the shift key as you tap the "Enter" key.

Contribute indent button

#2: Need to indent a single line, or one or more paragraphs, of text? Use the indent button (see image) NOT the space bar. Why? Because using the spacebar will result in a string of non-breaking spaces that could size differently on different browsers, resulting in a ragged left margin, or create awkward and unnatural sentence wrapping.

Detailed information about using Contribute is also available on this site.
