Network Storage FAQ

What is the standard storage space allotment?
Faculty have 20 GB, staff have 5 GB, and graduate students have 1 GB of file space. Departments and research groups have considerably more space available to them for collaborative work. Undergraduates paid by WCAS may get access to collaborative work space during the quarter(s) of their employment, but they do not receive individual file space.

I just want access to my standard storage space, how do I do that?
Submit a Weinberg IT Service Request for access to your standard storage space. A Weinberg IT technical support consultant will contact you to setup access from your computers, and give you documentation on how to access the storage from home.

Can non-NU research collaborators be given access to group storage space?
Yes, with a NetID. To get a NetID for them you must have your department chair submit a request to email-accounts@northwestern.edu. Once they are assigned a NetID please submit a Weinberg IT Service Request to give their NetID access to a shared storage drive or folder.

Can undergraduates be given access to group storage space?
Yes, access to net-storage is available to undergraduate students who are being paid for their work with Weinberg College faculty. This access is limited to the work space and time period relevant to the paid services.

Who can access my personal storage space?
Personal storage can only be accessed by its owner.

Who can access group storage space?
Group storage space can be configured to allow access to any list or group of NetIDs the owner specifies.

What platforms are supported for accessing the storage space?
We support Windows, MacOS, and Linux/Unix.

Can I access the storage space from off-campus?
Yes, provided you connect through the NUIT VPN, and map the drive.

How can I access the storage space from a Linux/Unix system?
Please submit a Weinberg IT Service Request for instructions.

How is the storage space backed up?

The storage space is running on redundant hardware and is backed up nightly. Backups are kept for three months in a secure offsite location. Restores may take up to five business days.

How do I order additional storage space?
To order additional storage space, please submit a Weinberg IT Service Request. In addition to filling out the contact information in the ticket, please provide the following information with your request:

  • Contact Name and NetID (if not the submitter)
  • Type of space (personal or group)
  • Requested amount of additional space
  • NetIDs of anyone who needs access to group space

Service Upgrade: VPN

NUIT has upgraded the VPN service for improved reliability and capacity. If you use VPN for services like file sharing, remote desktop, or NU Financials, please configure your computer to use the upgraded service.
