Removing Old Email Accounts After Migrating to Collaboration Services

How do I remove old email accounts now that I am using Collaboration Services?

Outlook 2010 for Windows

  1. Click the File tab.
  2. Select Account Settings and then Account Settings again from the drop-down menu.
  3. Select the old email account from the E-mail Accounts list. It should show as type "POP/SMTP" or "IMAP/SMTP". Click Remove.
  4. When asked, click OK to confirm deleting the account.

Locally stored mail will still be accessible within Outlook under the old email account name.

Outlook 2011 for Mac OS

  1. Select Accounts from the Tools menu.
  2. Select the old email account from the list in the left-hand pane. It should show as a POP account or IMAP account in the main pane. Click the "-" button at the bottom-left to delete.
  3. When asked, click Delete.

Locally stored mail will still be accessible within Outlook under "On My Computer".

Apple Mail for Mac OS

  1. In the title bar, select Preferences from the Mail menu.
  2. Under Accounts, select the Advanced button.
  3. Uncheck Include when automatically checking for new messages.
  4. Close the window to save. When asked, click Save.
  5. Select the Account Information button.
  6. Click the drop-down next to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): and select Edit SMTP Server List...
  7. Highlight the old Northwestern email server - hecky, casbah, lulu, merle, mrjim, or mail.it.northwestern.edu - and click the minus sign (-) below the server list.
  8. Click OK to save changes, then close the Preferences window.

Locally stored mail will still be accessible within Apple Mail.

Thunderbird for Windows and Mac OS (using POP)

  1. In the title bar, select Account Settings from the Tools menu.
  2. Under your old account (likely called "Northwestern"), select Server Settings in the left-hand pane. You should see the server name as hecky, casbah, lulu, merle, or mail.it.northwestern.edu.
  3. Uncheck Check for new messages at startup and Check for new messages every 10 minutes.
  4. Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the left-hand pane.
  5. Highlight the old Northwestern email server - hecky, casbah, lulu, merle, mrjim, or mail.it.northwestern.edu - and click Remove. When asked, "Are you sure you want to delete the server?", click Yes.
  6. Click OK to save changes and close the window.

Thunderbird for Windows and Mac OS (using IMAP)

  1. In the title bar, select Account Settings from the Tools menu.
  2. Highlight your old account (likely called "Northwestern"). To confirm this is the correct account, select Server Settings below the account - you should see the server name as hecky, casbah, lulu, merle, or mail.it.northwestern.edu.
  3. Click the Account Actions drop-down at the bottom-left, then select Remove Account. When asked, "Are you sure you want to remove the account?", click OK.
  4. Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the left-hand pane.
  5. Highlight the old Northwestern email server - hecky, casbah, lulu, merle, mrjim, or mail.it.northwestern.edu - and click Remove. When asked, "Are you sure you want to delete the server?", click Yes.
  6. Click OK to save changes and close the window.
