Spring Quarter 2020 - Reading Period Information

This email communication below was sent to Weinberg College faculty on March 19, 2020.

Dear Weinberg faculty member,

As you know, we have shortened the spring quarter by one week, giving us a nine-week quarter.  Fortunately, we are still in compliance with federal guidelines for time in class, which is necessary for an institution to be eligible for federal financial aid.  But we are JUST in compliance; nine weeks is the minimum amount of class time on the quarter system.

In order to remain in compliance—and to cover material instructors had been planning to cover—there will be no Reading Period in spring 2020. The Registrar will not list it on the official University calendar and Weinberg classes will meet (whether online or on campus) for the full nine weeks of the term.  An announcement to this effect will be sent to students before they return from spring break.

By canceling the official Reading Period, faculty will have the flexibility to use those days in ways most appropriate to their individual classes, including activities that are not permitted during Reading Period such as assigning due dates or holding exams.

Best regards,
