Staff Advisory Board Update: Winter 2017

A wide variety of events planned and hosted by the Staff Advisory Board brightened the winter quarter for Weinberg College staff this winter. Highlights included:

Hot chocolate and ice skating

Weinberg College staff enjoyed a mid-quarter break for hot chocolate and winter fun Feb. 10th at the Norris Ice Rink. Staff enjoyed seeing new and familiar colleagues, spending time on the ice, and the mild winter.

“Valuing Differences” workshop

On Feb. 17th, staff participated in the “Valuing Differences” workshop. Techniques were shared on how to communicate in a diverse and complex workplace. During the workshop, Weinberg staff discussed how an individual’s values, customs, religion and other attributes can affect communication between colleagues in the workplace, and how assumptions about a person can lead to inadvertently offensive actions.

Science Salon and Humanities Hours

Staff also enjoyed the perennially engaging Science Salon and Humanities Hour lectures:

Women’s March on Chicago

On Saturday, Jan. 21st, a group of Staff Advisory Board members and a few other College staff banded together to attend the Women’s March on Chicago. Other Weinberg staff attended separately and joined another quarter-million people in Grant Park to show their support for all women in solidarity with the National Women’s March on Washington.

No doubt the uncharacteristically warm and sunny January day helped make for a turnout much larger than anticipated. Friendly crowds flooded the park and march route, and the multitude of signs and banners addressed a wide variety concerns, including immigrants rights, LGBTQ rights, disability rights, education reform and more. Many marchers left the rally motivated to make change.

Weinberg Staff Advisory Board Grows by Leaps and Bounds

In response to the fall 2016 recruitment memo calling for new Weinberg Staff Advisory Board members, membership on the board has doubled, bringing the total to 16. Thanks to all who heeded the call!

The board welcomed the following members since November:
