Fall 2014 Weinberg IT Update

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the new academic year! I would like to take this opportunity to update you on Weinberg IT's operations, recently completed projects, and upcoming initiatives.

IT support in September and October

As you know, the period from Labor Day to mid-October is very busy for everyone within the College. To help ensure a successful start of the year, Weinberg IT will provide more focused support between Tuesday, September 2, and Friday, October 17. Support will include computer setups for new faculty and staff, break/fix support for all faculty and staff, and assistance with using the new Box file synchronization and sharing service. We will resume full support operations, including new computer setups for continuing faculty/staff, as of Monday, October 20.

If your computer has been turned off during the summer, we recommend you turn it on at least a few days before the start of the quarter. The computer will receive available security updates from the summer, which will require a restart. Doing so a few days in advance will help avoid disruptions to your work at an inopportune time.

We recognize it can sometimes take us longer than expected to fulfill requests for commonly asked tasks - installing software, setting up email, or connecting to VPN. To help with this, we have a web page - - that includes pre-configured installer scripts that you can use in lieu of opening support requests. This web page is available for computers on the wired and wireless campus network, and we are working to make it available from off-campus as well. We will continue adding to the initial list as we resume full support operations in late October.

What were we up to last year?

This past year, we focused our efforts in a few key areas: replacing older infrastructure with University-wide or shared services, improving support response in underserved areas, and establishing Weinberg College as a leader for technology services at Northwestern.

What will we do this year?

Many of you have taken the time to provide feedback on Weinberg IT over the past few years. I appreciate your thoughts, questions, and comments on our efforts, which we use to review and update our services and practices. I look forward to working with you in the coming year and learning more about how we can help you.

Best regards,
