The requirements listed below are for students who transfer to Northwestern from another university. For requirements related to interschool transfer, see the Interschool Transfer webpage.
- Distribution requirements
You must take courses in six intellectual areas.
- Foreign language proficiency
You must demonstrate proficiency through AP scores, department testing, or Northwestern coursework.
- Major in a field of study
You must choose and complete a major.
- Number of courses and quarters
After you enroll at Northwestern, you may receive credit for additional courses taken at other universities. You can use this credit to fulfill your degree requirements, but it may not count toward the Undergraduate Registration Requirement.
Some degree requirements are waived for transfer students:
- First-year seminars
Transfer students do not need to participate in first-year seminars, even those who enter without a full year of college credits.
- Writing proficiency
The writing proficiency requirement is waived for external transfers. Interschool transfers will be expected to meet the writing requirement.
